Aft fuselage:

Fig. 2-1 depicts the main structures around the aft fuselage including the main engines and OMS pods.

OMS structures and components:

Fig. 2-3 locates the main parts of the OMS system including the exhaust cones.  Fig. 2-4 shows the internal structure and components of the OMS pods.

Aft RCS structures and components:

Fig. 2-5  shows the major components that make up the aft RCS thruster system.  The larger primary thrusters perform the same function as the forward RCS thrusters while the much smaller vernier thrusters provide very fine control to the shuttles motion.

Go to Forward RCS Structures and Components

 

The RCS thrusters are name designated using their location, number and thrust direction.  Some of the name designations of the left aft RCS thrusters are shown on the diagram to the left.  The direction of motion of the Space Shuttle Orbiter due to the firing of any combination of RCS jets can be determined by using the diagram to the right.
